To facilitate China’s low-carbon energy economy transformation in line with its carbon neutrality goal, Tsinghua University established the China Carbon Neutrality Initiative (CCNI) project. The project is implemented by the Institute of Energy, Environment and Economy of Tsinghua University (3E). Professor ZHANG Xiliang, Director of 3E Institute, severs as the Project Lead.
PROJECT SCOPE
Component 1: retrofitting coal-fired power plants to carbon-free
Assess the decarbonization potential of coal power retrofit, conduct case studies of typical plants, and propose a cost-effective power sector decarbonization pathway.
Component 2: provincial carbon neutrality planning and capacity building
Develop modeling tools for carbon neutrality scenario analysis, conduct trainings for local researchers, and assist pilot provinces to develop carbon neutrality strategies and plans.
Component 3: International cooperation on climate change
Promote network building and research cooperation among international communities to facilitate the development and implementation of multilateral mechanisms for climate cooperation.
KEY PARTNERS
3E will work closely with domestic academic institutions such as the Institute of Nuclear and New Energy Technology of Tsinghua University, Institute for Carbon Neutrality of Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University, Jiangsu University, Henan University, and Xinjiang University, as well as leading power enterprises such as China Huaneng Group and China Guangdong Nuclear Power Group, in the implementation of the CCNI project.
3E will also cooperate with international institutions such as Carnegie Mellon University, Australian National University, etc. on the organization of visits, lectures, and workshops to facilitate consensus building and development ofjoint research among international communities.
The CCNI project has received funding from the Founders Pledge, Rethink Charity, and Effektives Spenden for the first two years of work. We sincerely welcome and appreciate other domestic and international funders to join us on CCNI as we move forward.
