In the fall semester of 2021, the Institute of Energy, Environment and Economics,Tsinghua University organized a global open course entitled Carbon Neutrality: Why and How the World is Addressing Climate Change (GOC). The course was successfully completed recently, more than 848,500 students joined the course online.

The course covers the global transition to carbon neutrality, the facts and impacts of climate change, key emission reduction technologies for carbon neutrality, climate change and carbon neutral environmental co-benefits, climate change and the effect on health of carbon neutrality, climate change economics, China’s carbon market policies and practices, climate change and carbon neutrality global governance. By taking this course, students can understand how the world can deal with the severe challenges of climate change through carbon neutrality.

The course, presented by Zhang Xiliang, Teng Fei and Zhang Da of the Institute of Energy, Environment and Economics, Luo Yong and Cai Wenjia of the Department of Earth System Science, He Kebin and Wang Can of School of environment, and Cao Jing of the School of Economics and Management, provided students with in-depth and forward-looking views about carbon neutrality.

“After taking the course, I have a new perspective on how China's energy structure is changing in the ‘dual carbon ’era, and how the world responds to the severe challenge of climate change through achieving carbon neutrality.” said Li, a student from Tsinghua University.
